5 Tips to Keep Your Home Safe While You’re on Vacation

Wilcoxon Insurance Inc., serving the greater Sioux Falls, SD community, offers home insurance to cover many of the things that can go wrong when you’re not there. But the best action is proactive, so here are five tips to keep your home safe while you’re enjoying your vacation.

Keeping Your Home Safe While On Vacation

1. Install an Alarm System

A home alarm system works in two ways; it deters burglars when you place an alarm notification in plain sight, and it also activates emergency response if your home is breached. The resulting loud alarm sounds will also force any burglars to try to make a swift exit, limiting damages and losses.

2. Unplug Everything

In your absence, there could be power surges or other electrical anomalies that raise the risk of damage or even fire. Keep your electronics and home safe by unplugging everything before you head out on vacation.

3. Move the Spare Key

If you keep a spare key on your property, remove it so that savvy burglars can’t get hold of it. Instead, ask a trusted friend or family member to take care of it.

4. Turn off the Water

To reduce the risk of flooding, turn off the water to your house at the main valve, located outside. This way, if a pipe suddenly bursts or something else out of the ordinary occurs, you won’t come home to water damage.

5. Inform Neighbors

Tell one of your trustworthy neighbors that you’ll be away. They can keep a casual eye on your property and be alert for any unusual activity or events. They can also pick up any packages that may be delivered to your door so it doesn’t appear to passersby that no one’s home.
